2016 Sequoia Platinum, 5.7, 131,000 miles. never once let us down. it also gets 13.5 mpg on a good day, and with gas in Reno pushing $4.20 this month i am doing the math on the new ones.
our use: two kids, 9 and 12, plus the dog. Tahoe in the winter for skiing (the real Lake Tahoe, not the truck), down to the coast twice a year, and a 19 foot travel trailer a few times a summer. the 2023+ with the hybrid twin turbo is rated around 19 to 22 depending on trim and 4WD, and the torque numbers are silly.
what i am not sure about: cargo space, which i keep reading is worse, and whether the hybrid holds up. anybody here drive one daily?
not a Sequoia owner but my brother in Twin Falls has a 2023 Limited, so second hand. he gets 18 to 19 around town in the cold, 20ish on the highway at 75. towing his 22 foot Jayco he sees 11, which is about what my 3.5 EcoBoost does with my boat. the hybrid does not save you much once you hitch up, the battery is helping the turbos, not doing your highway miles for you.
he likes it. he does complain that the low speed transition from electric to engine is a little jerky in parking lots.
cargo is real and it is the thing that made us buy a Suburban instead. the 2023 Sequoia puts the hybrid battery under the second row and the third row sits on a raised floor, and there is a shelf thing in the back to make it look flat. with the third row all the way back you have something like 11 or 12 cubic feet behind it. our old 2016 Expedition EL had over 40. if you use the third row and pack for a week, test fit your actual suitcases before you buy.
went and sat in one at Toyota of Reno yesterday with the kids and the actual ski bag. third_row is right. with the third row in its back position the ski bag went in at an angle and nothing else did. we slid the third row forward and it was fine, but my 12 year old is all legs and that kills his space.
the drive was great though. pulling up Mt Rose highway toward the summit it never felt like it was working, and my 5.7 sounds like it is going to die on that road. sticker was $78k on a Limited, which is its own problem.
same crossroads from the other side. we are deciding between a Tahoe and a used Sequoia and the Sequoia lost for us on cargo too. with three car seats in the second row we need the space behind the third for a stroller, and the stroller would not go in flat. if you only use the third row sometimes, the hybrid might be the better truck for you. look at what toyota publishes for cargo by trim on toyota.com, the TRD Pro and the Capstone are different from the SR5.
status: keeping the 2016 through ski season. it just got new front pads and a water pump at 131k ($780 at the shop on Kietzke), and it is paid off. i am going to watch used 2023 and 2024 prices instead of paying $78k. if a 2023 Limited with low miles shows up under 55 i will probably jump, and i will sit in it with the ski bag first.
