Got the L87 6.2 recall letter for my Yukon XL Denali. What is the dealer actually doing, and do I keep driving it?

letter showed up today. 2022 Yukon XL Denali, 6.2 L87, 58,000 miles, it is in the recall population for the crankshaft and connecting rod bearing thing. the letter says the dealer will "inspect the engine" and depending on what they find either repair it or replace it, or change the oil spec and give me a new oil cap.

the dealer here in Albuquerque says they can get me in for the inspection in three weeks. we leave for Pagosa Springs with the trailer on the 4th. my questions, for anybody who has had it done or who turns wrenches at a GM store:

what does the inspection actually consist of. how long is the truck gone. and is it dumb to tow 6,000 lb over Wolf Creek Pass before they look at it.

GM tech in Atlanta, been doing these since the remedy came out. here is what it looks like from my side of the counter.

the inspection is not a teardown. we pull codes, check for the specific DTCs and for bearing noise, and look at the oil and the filter for metal. if it passes, you get an oil change to 0W-40 dexos R, a new oil fill cap that says 0W-40 on it so the quick lube does not put 0W-20 back in, and an updated maintenance label. call it an hour and a half to two hours if the store is not swamped. if it fails, that is an engine replacement, and that is where the weeks of waiting come from, the engines are backordered.

most of the ones i have done pass. the ones that fail usually had symptoms already, a knock at idle, a low oil pressure message, or a check engine light the owner was ignoring.

on the trip: no knock, no warning lights, oil changed on schedule? i would go. i would also get the oil changed to 0W-40 myself before you leave, it is the same oil the remedy uses and it costs you nothing to be early.

for anybody else reading this in a panic like i was: the 5.3 is not part of it. my 2021 Tahoe is the 5.3 L84 and my VIN came back clean on the lookup. the L87 is the 6.2 only, so mostly High Country, RST with the 6.2 option, Denali, Escalade.

question for darnell. my Suburban is a 5.3 too, but my neighbor has a 2023 Tahoe High Country with the 6.2 and the dealer in Plano told her to stop driving it entirely until the inspection. is that store just covering itself? she has been Ubering to work for a week.

could be covering themselves, could be they heard something when she pulled in. ask them straight: did you hear a noise or see a code, or is this a blanket line. if it is blanket, ask for a loaner or a rental under the recall. some stores have been doing it for customers who were told not to drive. GM has been handling those case by case, so be polite and persistent.

and everybody, put your VIN in on the manufacturer site or the NHTSA lookup instead of trusting a letter or a facebook post. the build date range matters, not just the model year.

report back. did the 0W-40 change myself before the trip, Mobil 1 0W-40 is what the parts store had with the dexos R mark on the jug. towed our 26 foot Grand Design over Wolf Creek both ways, oil pressure gauge sat right where it always does, no lights.

inspection was monday. passed. two hours and ten minutes in the waiting room, new oil cap is black with 0W-40 printed on it, sticker on the radiator support. they redid the oil change i had just done, which is fine, it was free. mileage at the visit 60,412.

the service writer did say my truck makes "the normal 6.2 ticking" at cold start and wrote it on the RO. i am choosing to take that as a good thing to have on paper.

ford guy reading along. the cold start note on the repair order is smart, not just for you, for whoever buys it next. if that engine ever lets go out of warranty, a dated note that it was inspected and passed is going to help you. GM's recall page at gmc.com is where you can pull your VIN history for the file too.
